Grade Equivalent Chart (UNS / WNR / EN / JIS)
This grade equivalent chart lists stainless steel equivalent grades and the equivalents of the duplex, nickel alloy, titanium, carbon and alloy steel grades we supply, across the main designation systems: the American UNS number, the European material number (WNR / EN number), the EN or DIN name and the Japanese JIS grade. Use it to match a grade named in one standard to its counterpart in another.

Carbon and alloy steel grades are defined differently in ASTM and EN standards – often with different strength levels, test temperatures and product forms – so these are the nearest grades, not direct substitutes.
Equivalent does not mean identical
Equivalent grades in different systems have similar composition and are used for similar purposes, but their composition limits, mechanical properties and test requirements are not identical. For example, EN 1.4404 and ASTM 316L have slightly different limits on nickel and molybdenum. Material for pressure equipment must be certified to the standard named in the design or purchase specification; dual certification to ASTM and EN is available for many grades. If you need to substitute one grade for another, please check with the designer or the inspection authority.

Frequently Asked Questions
SS 316L (UNS S31603) corresponds to EN 1.4404, X2CrNiMo17-12-2, and JIS SUS316L.
Duplex 2205 is UNS S31803 or the tighter S32205, both corresponding to EN 1.4462.
Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) corresponds to WNR 2.4856, NiCr22Mo9Nb.
Not automatically. Composition and property limits differ between standards, so material must be certified to the standard in the specification.
The nearest European grade is P265GH (1.0425) to EN 10216-2, though the standards differ.
