Sheets – Stockist, Supplier & Exporter
Giriraj Impex is a stockist, supplier and exporter of sheets in stainless steel, duplex and super duplex steel, nickel alloys, titanium and mild steel. We stock and supply sheets from approved mills in cold-rolled and hot-rolled gauges and in a range of surface finishes, to ASTM A240 for stainless and duplex grades, the ASTM B specifications for nickel alloys and titanium, and IS 2062 and IS 513 for mild steel.
Sheets are thinner than plates and are chosen when the part will be bent, pressed, rolled or welded into light fabrications, or when surface finish matters – for process equipment, cladding, ducting, kitchen and food equipment, and panels.

Surface finishes
Stainless steel sheet finishes are defined in ASTM A480. The finish affects appearance, cleanability and corrosion behaviour, so it should be stated on every order.
| Finish | Description | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| No. 1 | Hot rolled, annealed and pickled; dull, slightly rough | Heavier gauges, industrial equipment |
| 2B | Cold rolled, annealed, pickled and lightly skin-passed; smooth matt grey | General fabrication, process equipment |
| BA | Bright annealed in a controlled atmosphere; reflective | Appliances, decorative and hygienic surfaces |
| No. 4 | Brushed with a directional grit finish | Kitchen and food equipment, panels, lifts |
| No. 8 (mirror) | Polished to a mirror finish | Decorative work and signage |
Sheets can be supplied with PVC protective film on request.
Chequered plates and mild steel sheets
Chequered plates have a raised pattern for slip resistance and are used for flooring, platforms, stair treads and vehicle bodies, in mild steel and stainless steel. Mild steel sheets are supplied hot rolled to IS 2062 for structural fabrication, and cold rolled to IS 513 where a smoother surface and closer thickness tolerance are needed for forming and painting.
Sizes, gauges and supply
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Thickness | Ordered in millimetres or gauge (SWG); sheet thickness as the product standard and mill range allow |
| Sizes | Standard mill sheet sizes; other sizes on enquiry |
| Form | Cut sheets; continuous strip and coil – see coils |
| Documents | Mill test certificate (MTC); third-party inspection on request |
Heavier thicknesses are covered on our plates page, and discs and blanks on our circles page. Send the grade, thickness, finish, sheet size and quantity, and we will confirm availability.
Austenitic and ferritic stainless sheets
Most stainless sheet is austenitic – 304, 304L, 316 and 316L – which is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, forms and welds easily and resists corrosion well. Ferritic grades such as 409 and 430 contain chromium but little or no nickel. They are magnetic, cost less and are used for exhaust systems (409) and for appliances, trims and indoor decorative work (430), where the corrosion conditions are milder. For chloride-bearing environments, duplex and super duplex sheets give higher strength and better resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking than 316L.
Working with sheets
Sheets are usually laser, plasma or shear cut, then bent, rolled or deep drawn and joined by TIG or MIG welding. The grade and finish affect each step: low-carbon \"L\" grades reduce the risk of sensitisation in the weld zone, polished finishes should keep their protective film until fabrication is complete, and the grain direction of No. 4 finish should be kept consistent across visible panels. After welding, stainless sheets are normally pickled and passivated to restore the corrosion resistance of the weld area.
Ordering sheets
Please state the grade and standard, thickness in millimetres, surface finish, sheet size, quantity and whether protective film or a mill test certificate to a specific edition of the standard is required.
For dairy, food, beverage and pharmaceutical equipment, 316L sheet in 2B or No. 4 finish is a common choice: it cleans easily, resists the chlorides found in many cleaning chemicals and welds without sensitisation. Polished sheets are usually supplied with PVC film or paper interleaving so the finish survives handling, cutting and bending, and the film is removed once fabrication is complete. As with plates, stainless sheets should be stored away from carbon steel and handled with clean tools to avoid iron contamination of the surface.
Applications
Sheets are used for chemical and pharmaceutical process equipment, dairy and food machinery, commercial kitchens, heat-exchanger baffles, ducting, architectural cladding and panels, transport bodies, electrical enclosures and general fabrication. Nickel alloy and titanium sheets are used in chemical processing, heat treatment equipment and marine applications. Every product form is listed on the products page.
Titanium sheet is used in plate heat exchangers and chlorine and seawater service; Inconel and Incoloy sheets in furnace parts, heat shields and heat-treatment fixtures; and Hastelloy and Alloy 20 sheets in acid-handling equipment. For these alloys the sheet is ordered to the same ASTM B specification as the matching plate, so tell us the alloy, specification, thickness and size required and we will confirm availability.
Where a project needs sheets and plates in the same grade, both can be supplied together under one order, each with its mill test certificate.

Frequently Asked Questions
2B is a cold-rolled finish: the sheet is annealed, pickled and given a light final pass between polished rolls. It has a smooth, matt grey surface and is the most widely used finish for general fabrication and process equipment.
316 contains molybdenum, which improves resistance to pitting in chloride environments such as seawater, brine and many chemicals. 304 is suitable for general corrosion resistance and is more economical where chlorides are not a concern.
Sheet thickness can be ordered in millimetres or as a gauge number (SWG). Please give the thickness in millimetres where possible, so there is no doubt about the gauge system being used.
Chequered plates have a raised pattern for grip and are used for floors, platforms, walkways, stair treads, trailer and truck beds and ramps.
Yes. Stainless steel sheets with polished or bright finishes can be supplied with PVC protective film on request, to protect the surface during handling and fabrication.
Austenitic grades such as 304 and 316 are essentially non-magnetic when annealed, though cold working can make them slightly magnetic. Ferritic grades such as 409 and 430 are magnetic.
