Coils – Stockist, Supplier & Exporter
Giriraj Impex is a stockist, supplier and exporter of coils in stainless steel, duplex and super duplex steel, nickel alloys and mild steel. We stock and supply coils from approved mills in hot-rolled and cold-rolled thicknesses, in full mill widths and as slit coils and strip, to ASTM A240 for stainless and duplex grades, the relevant ASTM B specifications for nickel alloys, and IS 2062 and IS 513 for mild steel, with mill test certificates.
Coils are the form in which flat-rolled steel leaves the rolling mill. They are bought by fabricators, tube makers, press shops and service centres that cut, slit, form or roll the material themselves – for welded pipe and tube, kitchen and appliance parts, automotive exhaust components, heat-exchanger parts, roofing and cladding, and general fabrication.

Coil materials and grades
| Material | Typical grades | Main standards |
|---|---|---|
| Stainless steel – austenitic | 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, 310S | ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 |
| Stainless steel – ferritic and martensitic | 409, 410, 430 | ASTM A240 |
| Duplex and super duplex steel | UNS S31803, S32205, S32750 | ASTM A240 |
| Nickel alloys | Alloy 600, 625, 800, 825, 400, C276 | ASTM B168, B443, B409, B424, B127, B575 |
| Mild steel | Hot rolled and cold rolled | IS 2062, IS 513 |
Stainless steel coils are the most commonly ordered. Duplex, nickel alloy and other coils are supplied on enquiry, usually as slit coil or strip in the widths the customer needs. Please tell us the grade, specification, thickness, width and coil weight required, and we will confirm availability.
Hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils
Hot-rolled coils are rolled at high temperature from slab to the final thickness, then annealed and pickled for stainless grades. They come in heavier thicknesses, with a dull matt surface (finish 1) and wider thickness tolerances. They are used where surface appearance is not critical – for structural and heavy fabrication, tanks, and as feedstock for further cold rolling.
Cold-rolled coils are rolled further at room temperature from hot-rolled coil to thinner gauges, then annealed and pickled or bright annealed. Cold rolling gives closer thickness tolerances, better flatness and a smoother surface, so cold-rolled coil is used for welded tube and pipe, deep-drawn and pressed parts, kitchen and appliance components and decorative work.
| Item | Hot-rolled coil | Cold-rolled coil |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | Heavier gauges | Thinner gauges |
| Surface | Finish 1 – annealed and pickled, dull | 2B, BA, 2D; polished No. 4 or hairline |
| Tolerances | Wider | Closer, with better flatness |
| Typical uses | Heavy fabrication, tanks, re-rolling | Tube making, pressing, appliances, decorative work |
Surface finishes
Stainless steel coil finishes are defined in ASTM A480 and are the same as for sheet:
- 2B – cold rolled, annealed, pickled and lightly skin-passed; smooth matt grey. The standard finish for process equipment, tube making and general fabrication.
- 2D – cold rolled, annealed and pickled without skin pass; dull. Used for deep drawing.
- BA – bright annealed in a controlled atmosphere; reflective. Used for appliances, decorative trim and hygienic surfaces.
- No. 4 and hairline – brushed finishes for kitchens, lifts and panels, applied to coil before cutting.
- Finish 1 – hot rolled, annealed and pickled, for heavier gauges.
Polished and bright coils can be supplied with PVC protective film on one side on request.
Sizes, slitting and supply
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Thickness | Cold-rolled and hot-rolled thicknesses as the product standard and mill range allow; ordered in millimetres or gauge |
| Width | Full mill widths, or slit coils and narrow strip to the width required |
| Coil weight | As agreed with the order, to suit the customer's handling and decoiling equipment |
| Edge | Mill edge or slit edge |
| Form | Coils, slit coils, strip; cut-to-length sheets – see sheets |
| Packing | Eye-to-wall or eye-to-sky on wooden pallets, wrapped and strapped for transport and export |
| Documents | Mill test certificate (MTC); third-party inspection on request |
Coils and sheets come from the same mill production; where the customer needs flat pieces rather than a continuous coil, material is supplied as sheets, heavier thicknesses as plates, and discs and blanks as circles.
Choosing the grade
304 and 304L coils are the general-purpose choice for kitchen, food, appliance and process applications, and for welded tube. 316 and 316L, with molybdenum, are chosen for coastal, chemical and pharmaceutical service where chlorides or acids are present. 321 and 310S are used for elevated-temperature parts such as exhaust systems, furnace parts and heat shields. The ferritic grades 409 and 430 contain little or no nickel, are magnetic and cost less – 409 is widely used for automotive exhaust systems and 430 for appliances, trims and indoor decorative work. 410 is a hardenable martensitic grade used for blades and wear parts.
Duplex and super duplex coils combine higher strength with better resistance to pitting and stress corrosion cracking than 316L, and are used for welded tube, tank and vessel parts in chloride service. Nickel alloy coils and strip are used for heat-exchanger and furnace components and for acid-handling equipment, where stainless steel would not last.
Working with coils
Coils are decoiled and then slit, cut to length, roll formed, blanked or pressed. Customers making welded tube and pipe feed slit strip into a forming mill and weld the seam continuously, so the strip width, edge condition and thickness tolerance must suit the tube size. Press shops need consistent mechanical properties and a suitable surface finish for deep drawing. When ordering, please tell us the end use, so that the grade, finish, temper and width can be matched to the process.
Stainless coils should be stored indoors, off the floor and away from carbon steel, and handled with suitable lifting equipment to avoid edge damage and contamination of the surface.
Applications
Coils are used for welded stainless steel tube and pipe, kitchen equipment and sinks, household appliances, automotive exhaust systems, heat-exchanger parts, food and dairy equipment, chemical and pharmaceutical equipment, roofing and cladding, lift and escalator panels, transport bodies, electrical enclosures and general fabrication. All products are listed on the products page.
Ordering coils
Please give the material and grade, specification, hot rolled or cold rolled, thickness, width, surface finish, coil weight or inner diameter limits, edge condition, protective film, quantity and any inspection or testing requirement. Each coil is supplied with its mill test certificate, and the coil label shows the grade, heat number, thickness, width and weight so that material can be traced through slitting and fabrication.

Frequently Asked Questions
A coil is a continuous length of flat-rolled steel wound into a roll, as it leaves the rolling mill. Sheets are cut to length from coil. Customers buy coil when they slit, cut or form the material themselves.
Hot-rolled coil is thicker, with a dull surface and wider tolerances. Cold-rolled coil is rolled further at room temperature to thinner gauges, with closer tolerances, better flatness and smoother finishes such as 2B and BA.
ASTM A240 (ASME SA240) covers stainless steel plate, sheet and strip, including coil. General requirements for finishes and tolerances are in ASTM A480.
