Hot-rolled (HR) and cold-rolled (CR) stainless coils
Hot-rolled stainless coil is rolled from slab at high temperature, then annealed and pickled. It is supplied in heavier thicknesses with a dull matt surface and is used for heavy fabrication, tanks, structural parts and as feedstock for cold rolling. Cold-rolled stainless coil is rolled further at room temperature to thinner gauges and then annealed and pickled (2B and 2D) or bright annealed (BA). Cold rolling gives closer thickness tolerance, better flatness and a smooth surface, so CR coil is the choice for tube making, pressing, deep drawing, appliances and decorative work.
2B, BA and other finishes
- 2B – cold rolled, annealed, pickled and given a light skin pass on polished rolls for a smooth, matt-grey surface. The most widely used cold-rolled finish, for process equipment, tanks, welded tube and general fabrication.
- BA (bright annealed) – annealed in a protective atmosphere so the surface stays bright and reflective. Used for appliance panels, cookware, trims, reflectors and hygienic surfaces.
- 2D – cold rolled, annealed and pickled without a skin pass; dull. Holds lubricant well for deep drawing.
- No. 4 and hairline – directional brushed finishes applied on the coil for kitchen equipment, lift interiors and panels.
The finish should be stated on every order, as it affects appearance, cleanability and suitability for the next process.
Choosing the grade
304 and 304L are the general-purpose grades for kitchen, food, appliance, process and welded-tube applications. 316 and 316L are chosen where chlorides, acids or coastal exposure are expected, such as chemical, pharmaceutical and marine equipment. 321, stabilised with titanium, and 310S, with 25% chromium and 20% nickel, are used for exhaust parts, furnace components and heat shields. 409 is a low-cost ferritic grade widely used for automotive exhaust systems, 430 is a ferritic grade for appliances, cookware bases and indoor trim, and 410 is a hardenable martensitic grade for blades and wear parts.
Ferritic and martensitic grades are magnetic; austenitic grades are non-magnetic when annealed but may become slightly magnetic after heavy cold work.
Slitting, coil weight and packing
Coils can be supplied in full mill width or slit to narrower coils and strip to suit tube mills, roll formers and presses. Please give the required width and tolerance, maximum coil weight, inner diameter and outer diameter limits to suit your decoiler, and edge condition. Coils are packed eye-to-wall or eye-to-sky on wooden pallets, wrapped against moisture and strapped, with edge protectors for transport and export. Each coil carries a label showing grade, heat number, thickness, width and weight, matching the mill test certificate.
Applications and related products
Stainless steel coils are used for welded tube and pipe, kitchen sinks and cookware, household appliances, automotive exhaust systems, food and dairy equipment, pharmaceutical and chemical equipment, lift and escalator panels, architectural trim, heat-exchanger parts and general fabrication. Welded tube and pipe made from coil are on our stainless steel welded pipes and stainless steel tubes pages, and seamless pipe on stainless steel seamless pipes. Cut-to-length material is on stainless steel sheets and stainless steel plates, and discs on stainless steel circles. In stainless steel we also supply flanges, pipe fittings, round bars, wires, fasteners, angles, channels, flats and rings. All coil materials are on the coils page.
Frequently Asked Questions
ASTM A240 (ASME SA240) covers stainless steel plate, sheet and strip, including coil. General requirements for finishes and tolerances are in ASTM A480.
2B is cold rolled, annealed, pickled and lightly skin-passed, giving a smooth matt-grey surface. BA is bright annealed in a protective atmosphere, giving a reflective surface.
Hot-rolled coil is thicker, with a dull annealed and pickled surface and wider tolerances. Cold-rolled coil is thinner, with closer tolerances, better flatness and finishes such as 2B and BA.
Austenitic 304 is used for most kitchen sinks and deep-drawn cookware because of its formability and corrosion resistance. Ferritic 430 is used for some lower-cost and shallower products.
Yes. Coils can be supplied in full mill width or slit to narrower coils and strip to the width and coil weight required.
Yes. 430 is a ferritic stainless steel and is magnetic, unlike austenitic grades such as 304 and 316, which are non-magnetic when annealed.
