Mild Steel Sheets

Mild Steel Sheets

Giriraj Impex is a stockist, supplier and exporter of MS sheets – hot-rolled mild steel sheet to IS 2062 and IS 1079 and cold-rolled sheet to IS 513 – together with ASTM A36 and A1011 / A1008 equivalents. We supply MS sheet from approved mills in standard sizes or cut to size, with mill test certificates.

MS sheets are used for enclosures, panels, ducting, tanks, machine guards, vehicle bodies, shelving and general fabrication.

Values for plates, sections, flats and bars to IS 2062.

Sub-grades A, BR, B0 and C set the impact-test requirement; sub-grade C is impact tested at −20 °C. Equivalent international grades are ASTM A36 (E250) and A572 Grade 50 (E350), and EN 10025 S275 / S355.

Hot-rolled or cold-rolled sheet?

Hot-rolled (HR) sheet has a dark mill-scale surface and wider thickness tolerances and is used for structural fabrication, tanks and heavier work; pickled and oiled (HRPO) sheet has the scale removed for painting and forming. Cold-rolled (CR) sheet to IS 513 is thinner, flatter and smoother, with closer tolerances, and is graded by formability – from CR1 for general bending to CR4 and CR5 for deep drawing – for panels, enclosures, appliances and pressed parts. IS 1079 grades HR1 to HR4 cover hot-rolled sheet and strip for forming.

Protection, storage and fabrication

Mild steel rusts when exposed to moisture, so it is supplied black with a light oil or mill scale, or primed, painted or hot-dip galvanised as ordered. Store material off the ground, under cover where possible, and keep it away from stainless steel to avoid contaminating stainless surfaces. Mild steel cuts, drills, bends and welds easily with standard equipment and consumables; preheat is normally only needed for thick sections or higher-strength grades.

Quality, documents and dispatch

Every supply is checked against the order for grade, size, length and quantity, with heat numbers matched to the mill test certificates. Material is invoiced with GST for supplies in India and dispatched with an e-way bill where required, and exported with the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and MTC. Third-party inspection by the buyer's nominated agency can be arranged on request.

Standards explained

IS 2062 is the Indian standard for hot-rolled structural steel – plates, sections, flats and bars – and sets the chemistry, carbon equivalent, strength and impact requirements of each grade and sub-grade. Section dimensions and weights are set separately, in IS 808 for beams, channels and angles, and tolerances in IS 1852. When buying to international projects, ASTM A36 or A572 and EN 10025 grades are used instead; equivalents are approximate, so material should be certified to the standard named in the design.

Thickness, gauge and tolerances

Sheets are ordered by thickness in millimetres; older drawings may still give a gauge number, which should be converted to millimetres when ordering. Hot-rolled sheet has a wider thickness tolerance and may vary slightly across the width, while cold-rolled sheet is held to close tolerances and flatness, making it suitable for laser cutting and precision bending. Pickled and oiled sheet should be painted or used soon, as the oil gives only short-term protection.

How to order MS sheets

To get an accurate quotation quickly, please give: the standard and grade, hot rolled, pickled or cold rolled, thickness, sheet size or cut sizes, quantity and finish. If the material is for a project with a specification or drawing, send it with the enquiry so the grade, sub-grade and testing can be matched. For export orders, also give the delivery port and any marking, packing or documentation requirements.

Applications and related products

MS sheets are used for electrical panels and enclosures, ducting, tanks and bins, machine guards, vehicle and trailer bodies, racks and shelving, doors and general fabrication. Other mild steel products: MS pipes, MS plates, MS angles, MS channels, MS flats, MS beams and MS round bars. Grade information is on the mild steel page, and other materials on the sheets page.

Frequently Asked Questions

An MS sheet is a thin flat-rolled mild steel product, hot rolled to IS 2062 or IS 1079 or cold rolled to IS 513.

HR sheet has mill scale and wider tolerances; CR sheet is thinner, smoother and flatter with closer tolerances, for forming and painting.

About 7.85 kg per square metre per millimetre of thickness; a 1250 × 2500 × 2 mm sheet weighs about 49 kg.

IS 513 covers cold-rolled low-carbon steel sheet and strip.

Yes. Sheets are supplied in standard sizes or cut to size.

Hot-rolled pickled and oiled sheet, with the mill scale removed for painting and forming.
