Mild steel or engineering grades
IS 2062 mild steel bars are used for structural and general purposes – anchor bolts, tie rods, pins and fabrication. For machined parts that need more strength, medium-carbon steels such as EN8 (40C8) and C45 (45C8) to IS 1570 are used for shafts, axles, studs and gears, and can be hardened. For pressure parts such as flanges machined from bar, ASTM A105 bar is specified – see carbon steel round bars. We manufacture bright bars by peeling, turning or cold drawing hot-rolled bars to close tolerances.
Protection, storage and fabrication
Mild steel rusts when exposed to moisture, so it is supplied black with a light oil or mill scale, or primed, painted or hot-dip galvanised as ordered. Store material off the ground, under cover where possible, and keep it away from stainless steel to avoid contaminating stainless surfaces. Mild steel cuts, drills, bends and welds easily with standard equipment and consumables; preheat is normally only needed for thick sections or higher-strength grades.
Quality, documents and dispatch
Every supply is checked against the order for grade, size, length and quantity, with heat numbers matched to the mill test certificates. Material is invoiced with GST for supplies in India and dispatched with an e-way bill where required, and exported with the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and MTC. Third-party inspection by the buyer's nominated agency can be arranged on request.
How we manufacture bright bars
We manufacture bright MS round bars from hot-rolled bars of certified heat. Peeled and turned bars have the mill scale and decarburised surface removed on a lathe or peeling machine; cold-drawn bars are pulled through a die for a smooth surface, close tolerance and slightly higher strength. Bars are then straightened, cut to length and marked with grade and heat number. Typical tolerance classes are h9 to h11.
Anchor bolts and tie rods
Foundation and anchor bolts are made from MS round bars bent to J or L shapes or with plates welded at the end, threaded at the top and galvanised where exposed. Tie rods and sag rods in buildings use MS bars threaded at both ends. The grade and diameter are set by the structural design; E250 is common, with higher grades or engineering steels for heavier loads.
How to order MS round bars
To get an accurate quotation quickly, please give: the grade, diameter and tolerance, black or bright, heat treatment, length, quantity and any testing. If the material is for a project with a specification or drawing, send it with the enquiry so the grade, sub-grade and testing can be matched. For export orders, also give the delivery port and any marking, packing or documentation requirements.
Applications and related products
MS round bars are used for shafts and pins, anchor and foundation bolts, tie rods, studs and fasteners, machine parts, gates, grills and railings, and general fabrication. Other mild steel products: MS pipes, MS sheets, MS plates, MS angles, MS channels, MS flats and MS beams. Grade information is on the mild steel page, and other materials on the round bars, rods and wires page.
Frequently Asked Questions
An MS round bar is a mild steel bar of circular section, supplied to IS 2062 or as engineering grades such as EN8.
