Hastelloy Round Bars

Hastelloy Round Bars

Giriraj Impex is a manufacturer, stockist, supplier and exporter of Hastelloy round bars in alloys C276 (UNS N10276) and C22 (UNS N06022) to ASTM B574 / ASME SB574, with Hastelloy B2 and B3 to ASTM B335 and Hastelloy X to ASTM B572 on request. We manufacture Hastelloy round bars in black and bright condition – peeled, turned or centreless ground – solution annealed, with hexagonal bars and forged bars for larger sections.

Hastelloy bars are machined into the stressed and wetted parts of chemical equipment – agitator and pump shafts, valve stems, balls and seats, fasteners, nozzles and forged fittings – where the surrounding vessel or pipe is also Hastelloy and every part must resist the same aggressive media.

Parts made from Hastelloy bar

In chemical reactors, agitator shafts, impellers, baffles and thermowells see the full force of the process and are often machined or fabricated from Hastelloy bar to match a Hastelloy or Hastelloy-clad vessel. In pumps and valves, shafts, stems, balls, seats and bolting are machined from bar. In flue gas scrubbers and pickling lines, studs, nuts and fixings in the wetted zone are made in C276 so that they do not become the weak point. Small-bore forged fittings and special connectors can also be machined from bar where the specification allows.

Manufacturing and quality

Hastelloy bars are hot worked from ingot or billet, solution annealed and rapidly cooled, then straightened and finished to size. Bright bars are peeled, turned or ground to the ordered tolerance. Ultrasonic testing is used to confirm internal soundness for shafts and critical parts, and an intergranular corrosion test can be specified. Each bar is marked with alloy, specification, size and heat number. Bars can be supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 on request.

Ordering

Please give the alloy and UNS number, specification, shape and size, tolerance, black or bright, length, quantity and any supplementary tests or inspection.

Machining Hastelloy

Hastelloy alloys are tough and work-harden rapidly, so they machine more slowly than stainless steel. Rigid machines, sharp positive-rake carbide tools, low cutting speeds, steady feeds and generous coolant give good results; tools should not be allowed to rub or dwell, which hardens the surface ahead of the next cut. Threads for fasteners are preferably produced by rolling or with sharp single-point tools. Ordering bright bar close to finished size saves machining time on this expensive material.

Hastelloy bar for fasteners and fixings

Fasteners in the wetted zone of a Hastelloy vessel or duct should be Hastelloy too, otherwise they corrode first and can fail long before the equipment. Studs, nuts, bolts and fixings in C276 or C22 are machined or hot formed from B574 bar. Because Hastelloy is relatively soft in the annealed condition, threads should be designed and tightened with this in mind, and anti-seize compounds used to prevent galling. See Hastelloy fasteners for finished products.

For valve and pump parts, bar is often specified with ultrasonic testing and positive material identification so the finished parts can be traced to a sound, correctly identified heat.

Applications and related products

Hastelloy round bars are used for agitator and pump shafts, valve stems and trim, thermowells, Hastelloy fasteners, nozzles and machined pipe fittings and flanges in chemical, pharmaceutical, pulp and paper, pickling and pollution-control equipment. To complete a Hastelloy project we also supply Hastelloy pipes and tubes and Hastelloy sheets and plates. See all bar materials on the round bars, rods and wires page and alloy guidance on the Hastelloy page.

Frequently Asked Questions

ASTM B574 (ASME SB574) covers low-carbon nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy rod, including Hastelloy C276 (N10276) and C22 (N06022).

Hastelloy B2 (N10665) and B3 (N10675) rod and bar are supplied to ASTM B335.

Agitator and pump shafts, valve stems, balls and seats, thermowells, fasteners and machined fittings for equipment handling hot acids, chlorine compounds and chlorides.

Yes. It is tough and work-hardens quickly, so it needs rigid set-ups, sharp tools, low speeds and good coolant. Bright bar close to finished size reduces machining.

Yes. C276 and C22 bars are supplied solution annealed and rapidly cooled, which gives full corrosion resistance.

Yes. Bars are supplied in random lengths or cut to the lengths stated on the order.
