Chequered Plates
Giriraj Impex stocks, supplies and exports chequered plates – steel plates with a raised anti-slip pattern – in mild steel to IS 3502 and ASTM A786, and in stainless steel 304 and 316, with aluminium on request. We supply chequered plates from approved mills in standard sizes or cut to size, with mill test certificates.
Chequered plates are used for floors, platforms, walkways, stair treads, ramps, trench and pit covers, vehicle and trailer floors, loading docks and toolboxes – wherever a strong, slip-resistant surface is needed.

The raised pattern adds weight to the base plate; the total weight for each thickness and pattern is given in IS 3502 or by the mill, and is confirmed with the quotation. Use our weight calculator for the base plate.
Mild steel or stainless steel?
Mild steel chequered plate to IS 3502 is the economical choice for industrial floors, platforms, stair treads and vehicle floors, and is painted or galvanised for protection. Stainless steel chequered plate is used in food, pharmaceutical and chemical plants, coastal and marine structures, and wherever floors are washed often or exposed to corrosive spills, because it needs no coating and is easy to clean. 304 is the standard stainless grade, and 316 is used for coastal and chemical environments. Other stainless and alloy sheets are on the stainless steel sheets, duplex, super duplex, Inconel, Hastelloy and Monel pages.
Design and installation
Chequered plate floors are designed for the span between supports and the load, using the base thickness for strength. Plates are fixed by welding or countersunk bolts to the supporting frame, with drainage holes where water may collect. The pattern should run in the direction specified on drawings for consistent appearance. For heavy foot traffic in wet or oily areas, open gratings may give better slip resistance and drainage than chequered plate.
Fabrication
Chequered plates are cut by shearing, plasma or laser, bent on a press brake (with the pattern on the outside of bends), and welded. Stainless chequered plate welds are cleaned and pickled to restore corrosion resistance. Mild steel plates are painted or hot-dip galvanised after fabrication.
Patterns and slip resistance
The diamond (chequer) pattern is the most common on mild steel plates rolled in India, while lentil or teardrop patterns are common on imported stainless and aluminium tread plates. The raised pattern improves grip for foot traffic and vehicle tyres, and helps water and oil drain from the surface. For areas that are constantly wet, oily or icy, gratings or plates with added anti-slip coatings may give better safety.
Galvanised chequered plates
Hot-dip galvanising gives mild steel chequered plates long life outdoors and in damp areas such as pump rooms, trenches and loading docks. Plates are usually fabricated – cut, drilled and welded to frames – before galvanising, so that cut edges and welds are also protected.

Frequently Asked Questions
A chequered plate is a steel plate with a raised pattern on one side for slip resistance, used for floors, stairs and platforms.
IS 3502 covers steel chequered plates in India; ASTM A786 covers rolled floor plates.
By the base thickness, excluding the height of the raised pattern.
Yes, in 304 and 316 for food, chemical, marine and wash-down areas.
The base plate weighs about 47.1 kg/m²; the pattern adds extra weight given in IS 3502.
Yes. Plates can be supplied cut to size.
