SS 316 Round Bars

Giriraj Impex is a manufacturer, stockist, supplier and exporter of SS 316 round bars and SS 316L round bars to ASTM A276 and ASTM A479 / ASME SA479, dual certified 316/316L where required, with 316Ti on request. We manufacture SS 316 round bars in bright condition – peeled, turned, cold drawn or centreless ground – and in black condition, hot rolled or forged, together with hexagonal, square and flat bars, in random lengths or cut to length, with mill test certificates.

SS 316 round bar is chosen over 304 wherever chlorides, acids or marine exposure are expected – for pump and propeller shafts, marine fittings, fasteners, valve parts, and components in chemical, pharmaceutical and food plants.

Chemical composition as given in ASTM A479 / A276 for each grade.

The composition of 316 and 316L bar, with 2–3% molybdenum, is given on the SS 316 / 316L page, and the actual analysis on the mill test certificate.

Why 316 bar for corrosive service

The molybdenum in 316 and 316L raises resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides. For shafts, fasteners and fittings, crevices are unavoidable – under nuts and washers, in keyways, at seals and threaded joints – so the better crevice resistance of 316 matters more than for flat products. In seawater, 316 is suitable for many fittings and fasteners above the waterline and in splash zones, but for immersed shafts in warm seawater, duplex, super duplex or Monel K-500 bars are often preferred.

Bright bars, A276 and A479

Bright SS 316 bars are peeled or turned, straightened and, for close tolerances, centreless ground and polished, ready for machining with minimal stock removal. Cold-drawn bars have a smooth surface and higher strength from cold work. ASTM A276 covers bars for general use; ASTM A479 covers bars for boilers and pressure vessels and should be specified when bars will be machined into pressure-retaining parts. Many bars are certified to both.

How we manufacture SS 316 round bars

We manufacture SS 316 round bars from certified billets and wire rod by hot rolling or forging, followed by solution annealing and pickling. Bright bars are then peeled, turned, drawn or ground to size, straightened and cut to length. Every bar is marked with grade and heat number and inspected for diameter, straightness and surface. Ultrasonic testing is carried out on request for bars that will be machined into pressure parts, and IGC testing for pharmaceutical and chemical service.

Ordering SS 316 round bars

Please give the grade and standard, shape and size, tolerance, condition and surface, length, quantity and any testing or inspection requirement. Bars are bundled or boxed, bright bars wrapped to protect the finish, and each bundle is tagged with grade, size and heat number.

Applications and related products

SS 316 round bars are used for pump and propeller shafts, marine fittings and fasteners, valve stems and trim, flanges and fittings machined from bar, chemical and pharmaceutical machinery, food and dairy equipment, surgical and dental instruments in 316L, and coastal architecture. Other stainless grades are on the stainless steel round bars page and other materials on the round bars, rods and wires page. In the same grade we also supply SS 316 pipes, SS 316 sheets and plates, SS 316 flanges and SS 316 pipe fittings.

Frequently Asked Questions

ASTM A276 covers stainless bars for general use and ASTM A479 (ASME SA479) covers bars for boilers and pressure vessels. Many bars are certified to both.

316L has a lower maximum carbon content, which avoids sensitisation during welding. Bars are often dual certified 316/316L.

Yes, for many marine fittings and fasteners. For shafts immersed in warm seawater, duplex, super duplex or Monel K-500 are often preferred.

316 contains 2–3% molybdenum, giving better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides and acids than 304.

Yes. 316Ti, stabilised with titanium, is supplied on request, mainly for European specifications.

Yes. Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 Practice E can be added to the order.
