SS 316 Flanges

SS 316 Flanges

Giriraj Impex is a manufacturer, stockist, supplier and exporter of SS 316 flanges and SS 316L flanges to ASTM A182 / ASME SA182 grades F316 and F316L, dual certified F316/F316L where required, with F316H and F316Ti on request. We manufacture SS 316 flanges to ASME B16.5 from ½" to 24" NB in Class 150 to 2500, to ASME B16.47 Series A and B for larger sizes, and to EN 1092-1, in weld neck, slip-on, blind, socket weld, threaded, lap joint and orifice types, with mill test certificates.

SS 316 flanges are used in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, marine and coastal piping, where the molybdenum in 316 gives better resistance than 304 to chlorides and acids.

Pressure ratings

F316 is in material group 2.2 of ASME B16.5, and F316L in group 2.3. Because 316L has lower minimum strength, its ratings in a given class are lower than those of 316 at the same temperature. Dual-certified F316/F316L flanges meet the strength of 316 and the low carbon of 316L, and are normally rated as 316. Ratings fall as temperature rises, so the B16.5 table for the material group and design temperature should always be used.

How we manufacture SS 316 flanges

We manufacture SS 316 flanges from forged blanks or rings of certified A182 material, forged close to shape, solution annealed and quenched to restore corrosion resistance. Machining covers the bore, facing, hub, thickness and bolt holes to ASME B16.5 or the specified standard, with a serrated or smooth face finish as ordered. Every flange is marked with grade, size, class, facing, bore or schedule and heat number, and inspected for dimensions, face finish and marking before dispatch.

Choosing 316 or 316L flanges

For welded joints in corrosive service, 316L or dual-certified 316/316L flanges avoid sensitisation in the heat-affected zone of the weld. Plain 316 is used where the flange will not be welded, such as blind and threaded flanges, or where its slightly higher strength is needed. 316H is specified for elevated-temperature service where creep strength must be guaranteed, and 316Ti for some European specifications.

Bolting and gaskets

SS 316 flanges are commonly bolted with ASTM A193 B8M studs and A194 8M nuts for corrosion resistance, or with coated B7 studs and 2H nuts where higher bolt load is needed. Gaskets are spiral wound with 316 windings and graphite or PTFE filler, PTFE-based sheet gaskets for chemical and food service, or RTJ rings for high-pressure joints.

Ordering SS 316 flanges

Please give the grade, flange type, size, class, facing and face finish, bore or pipe schedule for weld neck and socket weld flanges, quantity and any IGC, ultrasonic or third-party inspection requirement. Flanges are packed in wooden boxes with faces protected.

Applications and related products

SS 316 flanges are used in chemical and petrochemical plants, pharmaceutical and biotech facilities, dairy and food processing, desalination pre-treatment, marine and offshore utilities, pulp and paper, and water treatment. Other stainless flanges are on the stainless steel flanges page, and all materials on the flanges page. In the same grade we also supply SS 316 pipes, SS 316 pipe fittings, SS 316 sheets and plates and SS 316 round bars.

Frequently Asked Questions

SS 316 flanges are made from forgings to ASTM A182 (ASME SA182) F316 or F316L, with dimensions to ASME B16.5, B16.47 or EN 1092-1.

F316L has a lower maximum carbon content for welded joints, but lower minimum strength. Dual-certified F316/F316L flanges meet both requirements.

F316 is in material group 2.2 and F316L in group 2.3 of ASME B16.5.

ASTM A193 B8M studs with A194 8M nuts are common for corrosion resistance; coated B7 studs with 2H nuts are used where higher bolt load is needed.

Yes. Intergranular corrosion testing to ASTM A262 Practice E can be added to the order.

SS 316 flanges are made from ½" to 24" NB to ASME B16.5 and from 26" to 60" NB to ASME B16.47, in Class 150 to 2500.
