Titanium Pipe Fittings

Titanium Pipe Fittings

Giriraj Impex is a manufacturer, stockist, supplier and exporter of titanium pipe fittings to ASTM B363 / ASME SB363 in grades WPT2, WPT7 and WPT12, with other grades on request. We manufacture titanium butt-weld fittings to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43 – elbows, tees, reducers, caps, stub ends and crosses – and forged socket weld and threaded fittings from ASTM B381 forgings to ASME B16.11, with mill test certificates.

Titanium pipe fittings complete titanium piping systems in seawater, chlorine, bleach and chemical service, keeping the same corrosion resistance at every bend, branch and reduction.

How we manufacture titanium fittings

Seamless titanium fittings are formed from seamless pipe, and welded fittings from ASTM B265 plate or welded pipe, with the seams welded under full inert-gas shielding and inspected as ASTM B363 requires. Elbows are formed by mandrel bending, often warm, because titanium has greater spring-back than steel; tees are formed by extrusion or made by welding; reducers are pressed. After forming, fittings are annealed, descaled and pickled to remove any contaminated surface layer, machined to bevel ends and inspected to ASME B16.9. Forged fittings are machined from B381 forgings to ASME B16.11.

Stub ends for lap joint systems

Titanium stub ends are among the most widely used titanium fittings. Welded to the pipe and fitted with a loose steel backing flange, they give a titanium-faced joint at much lower cost than a solid titanium flange. Stub ends are supplied in long (ASME B16.9) and short (MSS SP-43) patterns, with the lap face finished to suit the gasket.

Choosing the grade

WPT2 is the standard grade for seawater, cooling water, firewater and most chemical service. WPT7 and WPT12 are used where crevice corrosion is a risk in hot brines and chloride solutions above about 70 °C, or in mildly reducing acids – common in chlor-alkali and hot brine systems. The fitting grade should match the grade of the pipe and flanges in the system.

Titanium piping is often designed with thinner walls than steel because no corrosion allowance is needed in most seawater and chemical services. Fittings should be ordered with the same wall schedule as the pipe – commonly Sch 10S – so that the bores match at each weld. Where velocities are high, long-radius elbows reduce erosion and pressure drop, although titanium tolerates much higher seawater velocities than copper alloys.

Welding

Titanium fittings are welded to titanium pipe by TIG with full inert-gas shielding – torch gas, a trailing shield over the cooling weld and purge gas inside the pipe – because titanium absorbs oxygen and nitrogen when hot and becomes brittle. Filler wire must match the grade. Joint surfaces are cleaned with solvent and stainless steel brushes reserved for titanium. The weld colour, from bright silver to light straw, is used as the acceptance check for shielding.

Ordering titanium pipe fittings

Please give the grade, fitting type, size, wall schedule or class, seamless or welded construction, end connection, quantity and any additional testing or inspection. Fittings are packed in wooden boxes with bevel protection and are traceable to their mill test certificates.

Applications and related products

Titanium pipe fittings are used in seawater cooling and firewater systems, desalination, offshore platforms, chlor-alkali and bleach plants, and chemical processing. Matching products include titanium pipes and tubes, titanium flanges, titanium sheets and plates, titanium round bars and titanium fasteners. Fittings in other materials are on the pipe fittings page.

Frequently Asked Questions

ASTM B363 (ASME SB363) covers seamless and welded unalloyed titanium and titanium alloy welding fittings, with dimensions to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43.

WPT2 is the ASTM B363 designation for butt-weld fittings in commercially pure titanium Grade 2, the most common titanium fitting grade.

Titanium stub ends are welded to the pipe and used with loose steel backing flanges, giving a titanium-faced joint at lower cost than a solid titanium flange.

They are used where crevice corrosion is a risk in hot brines and chloride solutions above about 70 °C, or in mildly reducing acids.

By TIG with full inert-gas shielding of the weld pool, the cooling weld and the pipe bore, using matching filler wire.

Yes. Socket weld and threaded titanium fittings are made from ASTM B381 forgings to ASME B16.11.
