Forged Fittings – Socket Weld & Threaded

Giriraj Impex is a manufacturer, stockist, supplier and exporter of forged fittings – socket weld fittings in Class 3000, 6000 and 9000 and threaded fittings in Class 2000, 3000 and 6000 – to ASME B16.11, MSS SP-79, MSS SP-83 and MSS SP-95. We manufacture forged fittings from ⅛" to 4" NB in stainless steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, duplex and super duplex steel and nickel alloys, with NPT and BSP threads, and with mill test certificates.

Forged fittings are used for small-bore, high-pressure lines: instrument and sample connections, vents and drains, hydraulic and steam lines, and utility piping.

Types of forged fittings

  • 45° and 90° elbows, equal and reducing tees, crosses
  • Full couplings, half couplings and reducing couplings
  • Caps and plugs (hex head, square head, round head)
  • Unions (MSS SP-83) and bushings (hex head, flush)
  • Swage nipples and pipe nipples (MSS SP-95), threaded and plain ends
  • Bosses and inserts

For branch connections from larger pipes, see olets.

Pressure classes and matching pipe schedules

6000Sch 160

Threaded2000Sch 80 / XS

The class does not mean the fitting's pressure rating in psi; the fitting is rated the same as straight seamless pipe of the matching schedule and material. Pipe schedules are in the pipe schedule chart.

Socket weld or threaded?

Socket weld fittings are fillet welded to the pipe and give a leak-tight, strong joint for process, steam and hydrocarbon lines. A gap of about 1.5 mm is left at the bottom of the socket before welding to allow for shrinkage and expansion. Threaded fittings are screwed on and need no welding, so they are used for low-hazard utility, air and water lines, instrument connections and where welding is not allowed. Threads are NPT to ASME B1.20.1 or BSP (taper or parallel) to ISO 7-1 or BS 21. Many piping specifications limit threaded joints in hazardous or cyclic service.

Threaded joints rely on thread sealant or tape and on correct engagement; they can be seal welded where the specification allows, which combines easy assembly with a leak-tight joint. Threaded fittings should be of a class at least matching the pipe wall, because cutting threads removes part of the pipe wall at the joint.

How we manufacture forged fittings

Forged fittings are made from bar or billet of certified material, closed-die forged to shape so that the grain flow follows the form of the fitting, and heat treated as the material specification requires. They are then machined – sockets, bores and threads – to ASME B16.11, inspected for dimensions and thread gauging, and marked with material, class, size and heat number.

Ordering forged fittings

Please give the material, fitting type, size, class, end connection (socket weld, NPT or BSP), quantity and any testing or inspection requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions

ASME B16.11 covers forged socket weld and threaded fittings – elbows, tees, crosses, couplings, caps, plugs and bushings – from ⅛" to 4" NB.

It is a class designation, not a pressure in psi. A Class 3000 socket weld fitting is rated the same as Sch 80 seamless pipe of the same material.

NPT is the American taper thread with a 60° angle; BSP is the British standard thread with a 55° angle, in taper and parallel forms. They are not interchangeable.

A Class 6000 socket weld fitting is matched with Sch 160 pipe.

ASME B16.11 forged fittings are made from ⅛" to 4" NB.

A gap of about 1.5 mm at the bottom of the socket allows for weld shrinkage and expansion and prevents cracking.
