ASTM A234 WPB Pipe Fittings
Giriraj Impex is a manufacturer, stockist, supplier and exporter of ASTM A234 WPB fittings – carbon steel butt-weld fittings to ASTM A234 / ASME SA234 Grade WPB, to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-43. We manufacture A234 WPB fittings in seamless and welded construction from ½" to 48" NB, in schedules from SCH 10 to XXS, including long and short radius elbows, tees, reducers, caps and crosses, with mill test certificates and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 on request.
A234 WPB fittings are the standard butt-weld fittings for carbon steel piping with A106 Grade B and API 5L pipe in refineries, petrochemical plants, power stations and oil and gas facilities.

Seamless and welded WPB fittings
Seamless WPB fittings are formed from A106 Grade B seamless pipe and are used in sizes up to 24" for high-pressure and critical service. Welded fittings are formed from A516 or similar plate, or from welded pipe, and are used for larger diameters; under ASTM A234, welds made by the fitting manufacturer are radiographed, and WPB-WX fittings have all welds radiographed. Project specifications often state which construction is acceptable for each line class.
Wall thickness at the fitting ends matches the pipe schedule, but forming thins the outer radius of elbows and the crotch of tees. ASTM A234 and ASME B16.9 require the finished fitting to keep at least the minimum wall needed for the rated pressure, so manufacturers start from heavier material where necessary. Fittings are therefore checked for wall thickness at critical points after forming.
How we manufacture A234 WPB fittings
Elbows are formed by hot induction or mandrel bending of pipe, tees by hot extrusion or hydraulic bulging, and reducers by hot or cold pressing. Large fittings are pressed from plate in halves and welded. ASTM A234 requires heat treatment of hot-formed fittings finished above a set temperature or cold-formed with significant strain, and many purchasers specify normalising for all fittings. After forming and heat treatment, fittings are shot blasted, bevelled to ASME B16.25, inspected for dimensions and wall thickness to ASME B16.9, marked with grade, size, schedule and heat number, and coated.
Sour service and low temperatures
For wet sour service, A234 WPB fittings can be supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 on request, with hardness limits and controls verified on each heat and heat-treatment batch. WPB is not impact tested, so for low-temperature service ASTM A420 WPL6 fittings, impact tested at −46 °C, are used instead. For high-strength pipeline systems, WPHY fittings to MSS SP-75 match the grade of API 5L line pipe.
Ordering A234 WPB fittings
Please give the fitting type, size, schedule, seamless or welded construction, radius for elbows, coating, quantity and any NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, impact, heat-treatment or third-party inspection requirement. Fittings are packed in wooden boxes or on pallets, with bevel protectors for export.
Applications and related products
A234 WPB fittings are used in hydrocarbon process lines, steam and condensate, boiler feed water, cooling water, firewater and utility piping in refineries, petrochemical and fertiliser plants, power stations and oil and gas facilities. They are matched with A106 Grade B and API 5L pipe, A105 flanges and B7/2H bolting. Other carbon steel fittings, including forged fittings to ASME B16.11, are on the carbon steel pipe fittings page, and all materials on the pipe fittings page.
Frequently Asked Questions
ASTM A234 WPB is the standard grade of wrought carbon steel butt-weld fittings for moderate and elevated temperature service, made from material equivalent to A106 Grade B.
WP stands for wrought pipe fitting and B is the grade, corresponding to the strength of Grade B pipe.
WPC has higher minimum strength than WPB, matching A106 Grade C pipe. WPB is far more commonly used.
WPB is not impact tested. For low-temperature service, ASTM A420 WPL6 fittings, impact tested at −46 °C, are used.
Yes. WPB fittings can be supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 on request, with the required hardness controls.
ASME B16.9 covers factory-made wrought butt-weld fittings, with MSS SP-43 for light-wall fittings and ASME B16.28 for short-radius elbows.
