Inconel Pipes & Tubes

Inconel Pipes & Tubes

Giriraj Impex stocks, supplies and exports Inconel pipes and tubes in alloys 600, 601, 625 and 718. We supply seamless Inconel pipes and tubes to ASTM B167 (alloys 600 and 601) and ASTM B444 (alloy 625), and welded pipe and tube to ASTM B517 and B516 (alloy 600) and ASTM B705 and B704 (alloy 625), sourced from approved mills in nominal bore and OD sizes, with mill test certificates.

Inconel pipes and tubes are used where stainless steel cannot cope with the combination of temperature and corrosion – furnace and heat-treatment equipment, high-temperature chemical service, seawater and sour-gas lines, flare systems, and heat exchangers in aggressive media.

Composition and properties

The composition limits for Inconel 600 and 625 are shown below. Inconel 625 in the annealed condition (Grade 1) has the minimum properties listed; Grade 2 (solution annealed) is supplied for high-temperature creep service.

Choosing the alloy

  • Inconel 600 – for high-temperature oxidation resistance and chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance: furnace components, heat-treatment muffles and retorts, caustic and chlorination equipment, and steam generator tubing.
  • Inconel 601 – for the highest-temperature oxidation and carburising environments, such as radiant tubes and burner parts.
  • Inconel 625 – for corrosion and strength together: seawater, sour gas, phosphoric and mixed acids, flue gas, flare and exhaust systems, and high-pressure lines where its strength allows thinner walls.
  • Inconel 718 – age-hardenable alloy for high-strength tubing in oilfield and aerospace components.

Grade 1 and Grade 2 alloy 625

ASTM B444 and the related product standards supply alloy 625 in two conditions. Grade 1 is annealed at a lower temperature, giving the higher room-temperature strength shown above; it is the usual choice for corrosion service up to moderate temperatures. Grade 2 is solution annealed at a higher temperature, giving lower room-temperature strength but better creep and rupture properties, and is used for high-temperature service. The grade affects the allowable stress in design, so it must be stated on the order.

For tubing in heat exchangers handling seawater or acid streams, alloy 625 Grade 1 is common; for high-temperature reformer or furnace pigtails, Grade 2 or alloy 600/601 is used depending on temperature and atmosphere.

Quality, documents and ordering

Inconel pipes and tubes are tested as their standard requires – chemical analysis, tensile, flattening or flaring tests, and a hydrostatic or non-destructive electric test on each length. Each length is marked with the alloy, specification, size and heat number. We check each consignment against the mill test certificate and the order before dispatch; third-party inspection is available on request, and material can be supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 on request.

Please give the alloy and UNS number, the ASTM specification, seamless or welded, size and schedule or OD and wall, length, condition (for 625, Grade 1 or Grade 2), quantity and any supplementary tests.

Applications and related products

Inconel pipes and tubes are used in chemical and petrochemical plants, refineries, offshore and subsea oil and gas, flare and exhaust systems, power generation, heat-treatment furnaces, pollution control and aerospace equipment. They are installed with Inconel pipe fittings, Inconel flanges and Inconel fasteners. We also supply Inconel sheets and plates, Inconel round bars and Inconel wires. Alloy guidance is on the Inconel page, and other seamless materials on the seamless pipes and tubes page.

Frequently Asked Questions

ASTM B444 (ASME SB444) covers seamless Inconel 625 pipe and tube. Welded 625 pipe is covered by ASTM B705 and welded tube by ASTM B704.

ASTM B167 covers seamless nickel-chromium-iron alloy pipe and tube, including Inconel 600 (N06600) and 601 (N06601). Welded 600 pipe is supplied to ASTM B517 and welded tube to B516.

Grade 1 is annealed and has higher room-temperature strength for corrosion service. Grade 2 is solution annealed for better creep and rupture strength at high temperatures. The grade must be stated on the order.

Grade 1 annealed Inconel 625 pipe to ASTM B444 has a minimum tensile strength of 827 MPa (120 ksi) and a minimum 0.2% yield strength of 414 MPa (60 ksi).
