Boiler Tubes

Boiler Tubes (IBR Approved)

Giriraj Impex stocks, supplies and exports boiler tubes – seamless carbon and alloy steel tubes to ASTM A179, A192, A210 Grade A-1 and C, and A213 T11, T22 and T91 – supplied with IBR certification when the order requires it. We supply boiler tubes from approved mills in standard and custom sizes, cut to length, with mill test certificates.

Boiler tubes carry water and steam through the furnace walls, economisers, superheaters and reheaters of boilers in power stations, process plants, sugar mills, refineries and heat-recovery steam generators.

IBR certification

In India, tubes for boilers covered by the Indian Boiler Regulations must be supplied with IBR certification – documents showing that the material meets the regulations, with inspection by an authority recognised under the IBR. Boiler tubes are supplied with IBR certification when the order requires it, with the mill documents and inspection arranged accordingly. Please state the IBR requirement in the enquiry.

Choosing the grade

A192 carbon steel tubes are used for water walls, risers and economisers in high-pressure boilers. A210 Grade A-1 and C have higher strength, allowing thinner walls in boiler and superheater sections at moderate temperatures. As steam temperature rises, alloy tubes are needed: A213 T11 (1¼Cr-½Mo) and T22 (2¼Cr-1Mo) for superheaters and reheaters, and T91 (9Cr-1Mo-V) for the hottest sections of modern high-efficiency boilers, where its creep strength allows thinner, lighter tubes. A179 is used for heat exchangers, condensers and low-pressure boilers.

Tube selection is based on the boiler designer's calculations of metal temperature, pressure and allowable stress for each section, using the design code. Water-wall tubes run cooler because water is boiling inside them, so carbon steel is enough; superheater and reheater tubes carry dry steam and run much hotter, so their metal temperature sets the alloy grade. Tubes that will be bent into coils or panels are often ordered with closer tolerances and checked for wall thinning after bending.

Membrane water walls are made by welding fins or bars between carbon steel tubes, and the tube grade must be compatible with this welding. Spare tubes for boiler maintenance and shutdowns are usually ordered to match the original tube specification and size exactly, with IBR certification where the boiler is registered in India.

Testing

Each boiler tube is hydrostatically tested or non-destructively electric tested, as the specification requires, and samples are tested for flattening, flaring and hardness. Alloy tubes are tested for tensile properties and heat-treatment condition. Positive material identification is commonly added for alloy tubes so that grades cannot be mixed during boiler fabrication.

Ordering boiler tubes

Please give the specification and grade, outside diameter, wall thickness (minimum or average), length, quantity, and any IBR, eddy-current, ultrasonic or third-party inspection requirement. Tubes are bundled with end caps and marked with specification, grade, size and heat number.

Frequently Asked Questions

ASTM A179, A192 and A210 cover carbon steel boiler tubes, and ASTM A213 covers alloy and stainless boiler, superheater and heat-exchanger tubes.

Yes. Boiler tubes are supplied with IBR certification when the order requires it.

Both are carbon steel boiler tubes; A210 Grades A-1 and C have higher strength than A192, allowing thinner walls.

T91 tubes are used in the hottest superheater and reheater sections of high-efficiency boilers because of their high creep strength.

A179 cold-drawn low-carbon tubes are used for heat exchangers, condensers and low-pressure boilers.

Yes. Each tube is hydrostatically or electrically tested, with flattening, flaring and hardness tests on samples.
