API 5L Line Pipes (PSL1 / PSL2)
Giriraj Impex stocks, supplies and exports API 5L pipe – line pipe to API Specification 5L (ISO 3183) in Grade B and X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65 and X70, at product specification levels PSL1 and PSL2. We supply API 5L pipes from approved mills in seamless, ERW and LSAW construction, with bevelled ends, black or coated, with mill test certificates, and PSL2 sour-service pipe on request.
API 5L pipe carries oil, gas and water in onshore and offshore pipelines, gathering lines, flowlines and plant interconnecting lines, and is also widely used for plant piping where it is certified together with ASTM A106 and A53.

Values for pipe body. PSL2 also sets a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio and Charpy impact requirements; see API 5L for elongation and full requirements.
The grade name shows the minimum yield strength: X52, for example, has a minimum yield of 52 ksi (360 MPa). Chemical composition limits, including carbon equivalent limits for PSL2, are set in API 5L for each grade and pipe type and are reported on the mill test certificate.
PSL1 or PSL2?
PSL1 is the standard quality level, with minimum strength requirements and basic chemistry limits. PSL2 adds tighter chemistry and carbon equivalent limits for better weldability, both minimum and maximum yield and tensile strengths, a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio, mandatory Charpy impact testing, and full non-destructive inspection of the weld seam for welded pipe. Most pipeline projects now specify PSL2, and sour-service pipe is always PSL2 with additional requirements in Annex H, such as hydrogen-induced cracking and sulphide stress cracking testing.
Seamless, ERW and LSAW
Seamless API 5L pipe is used in smaller diameters and heavier walls, for flowlines, high-pressure lines and plant piping. ERW (or HFW) pipe, welded from coil with a heat-treated seam, is the economical choice for medium diameters in onshore pipelines. LSAW pipe, formed from plate and double submerged arc welded, is used for large diameters and heavy walls in trunk lines and offshore pipelines. The construction is part of the pipe designation and must match the project specification.
Triple-certified pipe
API 5L Grade B and X42 seamless pipe is often certified together with ASTM A106 Grade B and ASTM A53 Grade B, so that one pipe meets plant piping and pipeline specifications. This simplifies stock and supply for projects that include both. See carbon steel seamless pipes for A106 and A53 and the carbon steel page for grade guidance.
Sour service
For pipelines carrying sour gas or crude, PSL2 pipe is supplied to API 5L Annex H and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 on request. Requirements include tighter limits on sulphur and other elements, hardness limits on the pipe body and weld, and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulphide stress cracking (SSC) tests. Please send the project specification with the enquiry so the requirements can be confirmed with the mill.
Ordering API 5L pipe
Please give the grade, PSL, construction (seamless, ERW or LSAW), outside diameter, wall thickness, length, end finish, coating, quantity and any annex, supplementary testing or third-party inspection requirement. Pipes are marked with API 5L, grade, PSL, size, wall, heat number and the mill's identification, and are supplied with bevel protectors and end caps where required.
Applications and related products
API 5L pipe is used for oil and gas pipelines, gathering and flowlines, water transmission, refinery and plant interconnecting lines, and piling and structural use. Matching products include high-yield flanges, WPHY fittings and B7 bolting. Other carbon steel pipes are on the carbon steel seamless pipes page and all materials on the seamless pipes and tubes page.
Frequently Asked Questions
API 5L pipe is line pipe made to American Petroleum Institute Specification 5L (ISO 3183) for oil, gas and water pipelines, in grades from B to X70 and above.
PSL2 adds tighter chemistry and carbon equivalent limits, maximum strength limits, mandatory Charpy impact testing and full weld inspection compared with PSL1.
X52 means a minimum yield strength of 52 ksi (360 MPa). The number after X is the minimum yield strength in thousands of psi.
They have similar chemistry and the same minimum tensile strength, and seamless pipe is often triple certified to API 5L, A106 and A53 Grade B.
